The Total Parenteral Order Calculator is a web based clinical application I developed with Dr. Yao Sun, medical director of the William H. Tooley Intensive Care Nursery at UCSF Children's Hospital.

Essentially, this application calculates nutrition requirements for infants and adds electrolytes, vitamins and other compounds specific to the needs of a given infant. There are several critical calculations that must be made to ensure that the ratios of the ingredients are in proper proportion. Or that if a given ingredient is present, another must not be present. In addition to the main calculator page, the calculator has two popup calculators that calculate total fluid volume and calcium / phosphorus titration, respectively. The calcium / phosphorus titration calculator graphs the ratio of calcium to phosphorus against a table of data that provides parameters for solubility.

This application is currently in a clinical trial in the Neurodevelopmental Intensive Care Nursery. If the trial continues to be successful, Dr. Sun is looking to have it be integrated into the UCare clinical application suite, a widely used tool at the medical center.
